Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel reaches monthly hot metal output milestone of 1 million tonnes

In August 2026, the Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Integrated Complex officially reached monthly hot metal output of 1 million tonnes, up around 2% from July 2026 and nearly 65% year on year. The milestone marks one year of synchronized operation across all six blast furnaces at the complex.

In the production chain for high-quality steel from iron ore, blast furnaces are considered the heart of the integrated complex. Their operating performance is a key determinant of production costs and efficiency across the value chain. The Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Integrated Complex currently operates six large, modern blast furnaces, including four with a volume of 1,080 cubic meters and two with a volume of 2,500 cubic meters.

Mr. Vu Thanh Lam, Acting Deputy Head of the Ironmaking Technology Department, said: “To reach this milestone, we adopted a new operating mindset and implemented a series of equipment upgrades and automation solutions, supported by close coordination and strong determination across all units in the production chain. This impressive figure demonstrates the complex’s technological mastery and its ability to operate the entire production system in a stable and synchronized manner.”

Alongside operational optimization, the technology team focused on removing bottlenecks that directly constrained output growth, particularly central gas flow inside the blast furnaces. The blast system was adjusted to increase air velocity and kinetic energy, helping address issues such as furnace-wall build-up, uneven burden distribution and hanging burden.

Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel also redesigned the burden-charging model to distribute reducing gas more evenly and improve ore reduction. This allows the blast furnaces to maintain stable operation even when output approaches or exceeds designed capacity.

The company has also continuously optimized ore batch weights, increased blast-furnace top pressure and adjusted the oxygen-enrichment ratio. These measures have directly supported strong output growth while reducing fuel consumption and making better use of the existing equipment system.

In addition to operational improvements, raw-material standards for the blast furnaces have been standardized. The quality of ore, coke and pellets is monitored more closely, while coke strength continues to improve.

The Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Integrated Complex contributes 12 million tonnes per year, including 9 million tonnes of hot-rolled coil and high-quality steel.
