Hoa Phat Group targets “green steel” development

On September 12nd and 13rd, 2023, the Vietnam Steel Industry Conference and Exhibition towards the green growth strategy organized by the Vietnam Steel Association was taken place at the International Convention Center in Hanoi. As the largest steel manufacturer in Vietnam, Hoa Phat Group has proactively introduced an investment roadmap to develop green steel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and aim to be carbon neutral in the future.

Hoa Phat Group’s steel product ecosystem gets impression

With a crude steel capacity of 8.5 million tons a year, the largest in Southeast Asia, Hoa Phat Group has a diverse ecosystem of steel products. Hoa Phat's value chain of high-quality steel products includes: hot rolled coils steel (HRC), steel pipes, galvanized steel sheets, container shells; high quality steel for prestressing steel, car tire treads, drawn steel wire, welding rod core, steel for bolts and screws. In addition, Hoa Phat Group also provides steel plates for the shipbuilding industry, structural steel...; steel billet and construction steel.

Hoa Phat Group is not only steel enterprise in Vietnam that can produce HRC, it is also proud to use the most modern technologies with circular technology to save resources. This help the group to be self-sufficient of 80 per cent in electricity production for steel and blast furnace slag is reused as S95 to supply the construction industry.

Visiting Hoa Phat's booth, Mr. Ho Nghia Dung - Honorary Chairman of the Vietnam Steel Association said that Hoa Phat Group's ability to produce HRC and many types of special steel shows that the domestic steel industry is self-reliant in terms of technology and techniques, affirming the capacity and maturity of Vietnam's steel industry.

Within the framework of the event, Mr. Nguyen Quang Loc, Head of the Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 Iron and Steel Production Complex Project, represented the group to introduce their investment orientation for green steel development.

Accordingly, Hoa Phat Group will give priorities in investment in developing high-tech steels and special steels to serve the mechanical engineering industry, automobile industry, shipbuilding, structural steel, etc. This is also the group’s production directions for their Dung Quat 2 project as well as future projects.

At the same time, Hoa Phat Group has always been interested in optimizing all production stages in a circular, closed direction, reducing energy consumption and building a roadmap to develop green steel and reduce CO2 emissions according to the Government’s general direction, aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Specifically, Hoa Phat Group has currently been implementing 8 actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions including: Training and practice for company employees according to Decree 06/2022/ND-CP, energy audit, CBAM; Using excess heat from coke oven hot gases to produce electricity; Applying CDQ dry cup stamping technology to produce electricity; Using residual heat to produce electricity in sintering; taking advantage of hot rolling from casting to rolling using a furnace; Using blast furnace wind energy recovery turbine (BPRT) technology. Hoa Phat also changed the method of transporting raw materials by using conveyor belts instead of cars, planting trees to help absorb CO2 gas, etc.

In the future, Hoa Phat Group will cooperate with the world's leading metallurgical partners to research and implement a carbon-neutral metallurgical technology roadmap. Some solutions have been considered such as increasing the use of renewable energy, DRI direct recovery technology; Replacing fossil fuels by using natural gas fuel to restore iron ore, applying continuous rolling casting technology to reduce energy consumption, moving towards zero CO2 emissions.

According to Mr. Nghiem Xuan Da, Chairman of the Vietnam Steel Association, the conference is a forum to provide and exchange multi-dimensional and latest information from State agencies, industry associations, experts, and local and foreign steel enterprises in the industry with regional and international laws and policies, to help steel enterprises carry out production, business and investment development in accordance with the country's and international green growth strategy.
