Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Company reached the milestone of 5 billion kWh of electricity generation output

On September 19, 2022, the Thermal Power Plant of Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Company officially reached the milestone of 5 billion kWh of electricity. If the output is calculated according to the current electricity price, it is equivalent to VND8 trillion, contributing to the autonomy of about 75 percent of the power for the production of the whole complex.

This is an important milestone for the factory after more than 5 years of establishment, contributing to providing a stable amount of electricity for Hoa Phat Dung Quat's integrated steel production complex as well as celebrating the 30th anniversary of Hoa Phat Group's establishment.

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Phuong, Director of Thermal Power Plant of Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Company said: The company invests in modern production lines of G7 countries to help optimize production, taking advantage of all sources of excess heat and gas in the iron and steel smelting process to improve power generation efficiency and save production costs at the complex. In addition to using residual heat for coke smelting to generate electricity, the plant is currently taking advantage of excess coal gas in the process of iron and steel smelting as fuel for boilers to generate electricity.

Residual heat generation is one of the company’s environmental protection investments, helping regenerate energy without using fossil fuels. This is also a common task of industrial production companies in the region in the carbon neutralization process, as a premise for the certification of green steel production.

Since July 2019, one year after installing the first generating unit, the power generation output of the plant has met the demand for iron and steel production in the complex. Since then, its power generation output has grown annually reaching the milestone of 2 billion kWh on March 24, 2021, and the milestone of 5 billion kWh on September 19, 2022.

The plant’s power generation capacity with existing line units can reach 2.7 billion kWh a year. Thereby, it would contribute to saving energy, being self-sufficient in electricity for production, reducing product costs, and minimizing environmental pollution. At the same time, it would help reduce the pressure on dispatching the national power grid, especially in the peak hot months.

In the coming time, in the plan to meet the power supply for Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2, the company will build and simultaneously deploy the residual thermal power generation line No 2. This Thermal Power Plant #2 has a capacity of 240MW including four turbines of 60MW each. According to the schedule, it is expected that by December 2024, the first turbine will be put into operation, and the others will be put into operation two months later.

Earlier, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Hoa Phat Group (August 20, 1992 - August 20, 2022), the 5 millionth ton of hot rolled coil (HRC) was also officially launched at QSP Factory at Hoa Phat Dung Quat Integrated Steel Complex.
